Hurricane Season is Coming: Review your Policies Now

Environmental

As Hurricane Season approaches, they recommend being proactive rather than reactive. Before any storms are on the way, review the following list for some helpful tips ahead of hurricane season:

1. Review your Insurance Policies - Make sure your insurance policies are paid and up to date. Review your limits and deductibles to be sure they are adequate to rebuild. The cost to rebuild a house today is significantly higher than even a few years ago, so it is a good idea to ask your agent if you should increase your Homeowner's and/or Flood Insurance Coverage. Remember, Flooding is not covered by Homeowner's Insurance!

In addition, if you have had any major life changes in the last year like getting married, adding an addition, buying a new home or buying expensive jewelry, it is a good time to speak to your insurance agent to review your coverages.

2. Thinking of Flood Insurance? Act sooner rather than later! -   Did you know that many times when a hurricane is on the way, insurance companies often put a stop on writing new flood insurance policies for a period of time or have a 30 day waiting period? Did you know that all homes are in a flood zone? You can check what flood zone your home is in here with this handy tool:

If you are considering flood insurance or have questions, you should get a quote now instead of waiting and possibly not being able to purchase coverage when you need it. 3. Have a Hurricane Checklist, purchase items and go over evacuation plan with family - Having a hurricane checklist well before a storm is on the way is a great idea to make sure you have items in your house you may need in the event of a storm and can help you be more prepared in the event you need to leave your home quickly. Here is a checklist from the Insurance Information Institute to get you started:
