About

Legacy has a long history of serving individuals and families in need. A merger of two agencies with a strong community presence and a combined 210 years of expertise led to the birth of Legacy:  Merging agencies included the 150-year-old Children’s Home which housed, educated, counseled and empowered youth with emotional and developmental challenges, and The Drenk Center, which delivered a full spectrum of behavioral health services to individuals of all ages for more than a half century.

The Children’s Home was established in 1864 as an orphanage for children of the Civil War. Initially only providing custodial care, the Children’s Home responded to community needs in 1937 and became the first agency to employ a social service caseworker and begin therapeutic treatment in a residential setting.

The Drenk Center, founded in 1954 by Judge Lester A. Drenk, began as a counseling program for Burlington County juveniles and their families. Since 1954, The Drenk Center had seen a steady expansion of services to meet higher levels of consumer needs in outpatient settings

Together, these organizations formed Legacy Treatment Services in 2014. Combined with an affiliation with Community Treatment Solutions, which specializes in working with youth who are at risk for out-of-community placement and was the first NJ agency to offer a community-based alternative to institutional placement for youth who are developmentally delayed, Legacy continues to evolve and expand its services throughout the state.

Legacy Treatment Services is a vibrant nonprofit human services agency based in Burlington County with more than 70 programs and services throughout New Jersey, serving more than 20,000 individuals a year. Legacy is dedicated to providing a comprehensive array of behavioral health, mental health, intellectual/developmental and addiction services to meet challenges for individuals of all ages. The organization utilizes cutting edge technology and evidence-based practices in treatment and clinical care that ensure the continuum of integrated care meet individuals and families at their specific points of need. Legacy’s mission is to change the behavioral health and social service outcomes for people of all ages from surviving to thriving.
